Hungry Mountain Ranch provides habitat and movement corridors for various species, including golden eagles, kestrels, marten, black bear, cougar, mule deer, pileated woodpeckers, songbirds, western toad and Townsend’ big-eared field bats.
The Wetlands and ponds provide riparian habitat for songbirds and amphibians, with moose visiting spring and fall.
The steppe shrub is home to western meadowlarks, Western Skink, spade-foot toad, short-horned lizards sharp-tailed grouse, bats, long toed and tiger salamanders.
The property also houses conifer forests of pine and fir, with willow, pine grass, cottonwood, snowberry, boxwood, elderberry. These landscapes provide great habitat for black bear, cougar, bobcat, western gray squirrel, and coyote, among others.
The area boasts a wide range of perennial forbs and grasses, with scattered native shrubs like bitterbrush — a prime winter deer feed — Idaho fescue, blue bunch grass, ceanothus, choke cherry, serviceberry, rose, vine maple, ocean spray and several species of currant. Forbs include arrowleaf, balsamroot, silky lupine, desert buckwheat, Chelan penstemon, scarlet gilia, bitterroot, yarrow, arnica, and many more small wildflowers that provide color year round.
